Having played hockey my whole life and refereed for the past 29 years I am skating in the 11 Day Power Play in memory of my grandmother who lost her battle to ovarian cancer 18 year ago. I am also skating in memory of my good friends Jay Saxbury , Brian Finn and Tom Mingle who lost their battle with cancer. I am skating for my cousin Jamie and friends Roman Velarde, Holly Beales & my friend Brandon who's mom is still battling and my good friends in stripes Tim Felshow, Tony Marecki and Rick Prochaska who have beaten cancer.
I am also skating for my co-workers at A Duie Pyle in memory of Larry Kowalski who was one of the most kind, honest and genuine people I have ever met in my life. He lost his battle to cancer this past August. I am also skating in honor Sue Kowalski (no relation) and Jake Pfisterer who have beaten cancer and Patty Hawkins who is still fighting.
I have set my goal at $1000 and I plan on exceeding my goal for this year.
This summer, more than 2,500 pairs of skates will hit the ice to play in the 2019 11 Day Power Play Community Shift to help in the fight against cancer! The 11-day game will be played in continuous shifts at Harborcenter in Buffalo, NY. This important event supports The 11 Day Power Play, raising critically-needed funds for cancer research and wellness programs at Roswell Park, Camp Good Days and Make-A-Wish WNY. While it is physically challenging to play in a marathon hockey game, it's a walk in the park compared to what most endure in their battle against cancer. Cancer is a disease that touches everyone, and The 11 Day Power Play wants to make an impact in our community. In the past two years, The 11 Day Power Play has raised nearly $2.5 million supporting cancer causes in Western New York.
